Fuel fire – Petrol Rs.50 / ltr, Diesel 36.07 / ltr

02 July 2009, Hyderabad.

Fuel prices are all set to burn holes in your pockets. The UPA government has increased the price of a litre of petrol from Rs. 45.56 to Rs. 50 while the price of a litre of diesel has gone up from Rs. 33.90 to Rs. 36.07 per litre. Desperate customers were seen queuing up late in the night at fuel pumps to top up their vehicle tanks. Vilas Kumar a taxi driver told this correspondent that this will have a severe impact on the middle class and the poor. He said his daily commission wages will be “reduced from Rs. 400 to at least Rs. 330, because the hike in fuel has to be borne by me and not by my vehicle owner. I cannot increase my taxi fare as the government rule does not permit that.” Prices of vegetables, rice and pulses will also shoot up due to hike in transport fares, which is being seen as inevitable after the hike in diesel prices.
