Rampant privatization of education is dealing blow after body blow to unsuspecting students. The latest to join the list of victims are 1200 students from the "prestigious" Icfai Tech in the City. Icfai has a UGC recognized university in Dehradun and Agartala. But in a bid to make a quick buck, Icfai started enrolling students in Hyderabad too. UGC raised an objection to this and said that the 1200 students who had pursued their courses in Icfai's Hyderabad campus will not be awarded a degree. “After discovering that Icfai was enrolling students at the Hyderabad campus and then awarding them degrees from either Dehradun or Agartala, the UGC described this practice as illegal,” said sources close to Icfai. To this extent Icfai served notice to the students asking them to leave the campus. The notice said" ... in future, the Icfai University, Dehradun will not be able to conduct examinations for the students studying in Hyderabad and hence, grade
sheets/certificates, degrees cannot be issued by Icfai University, Dehradun to such students. Under these circumstances, we have to advise the remaining students to go to Dehradun or Tripura, where the academic year begins from August 1, 2009.” While this was at least acceptable for the 1st year students those in the 2nd and 3rd years are shell shocked and at a loss for any future course of action.
