India has lost the chief architect behind the country’s economic revolution. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. The senior Congress leader was admitted to the emergency ward of the AIIMS Delhi in a critical condition on Thursday evening. However, he breathed his last after his health deteriorated.
A statement issued by the AIIMS Delhi read, “The former politician had passed away while undergoing treatment for age-related medical conditions on Thursday night at 9:51 PM.” Several political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, JP Nadda, and others, extended heartfelt condolences on the legend’s passing.
Born on September 26, 1932, in the Punjab province of undivided India, Manmohan Singh graduated from the University of Cambridge, UK, with a First Class Honours degree in Economics in 1957. He later secured a D. Phil in Economics from Nuffield College at Oxford University in 1962. Following his entry in Indian politics, Manmohan Singh’s tenure as the Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996 is termed as the turning point in the economic history of independent India. Manmohan Singh’s role in ushering in economic reforms was a worldwide phenomenon.
Manmohan Singh served the nation as the Prime Minister twice, once from May 2004 and again in May 2009. The Indian government honored the legendary economist and leader with the country’s second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 1987.
