Nani and Mrunal Thakur-starrer emotional drama, Hi Nanna, released in December 2023 and earned critical acclaim and commercial success. Produced under the Vyra Entertainments banner, the film marked the directorial debut of young filmmaker Shouryuv. The film had its OTT premiere on Netflix in January 2024.

Now, after more than a year since its theatrical release, Hi Nanna has landed in an unexpected controversy. Popular Kannada filmmaker Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah took to Instagram and alleged that his movie ‘Bheemasena Nalamaharaja’ was remade as Hi Nanna without taking the remake rights. Mallikarjunaiah went on to tag Nani’s handle and wrote, “What a cheap thing to do.” Nani and Hi Nanna’s team are yet to make a formal statement to counter the freemake allegations.

Bheemasena Nalamaharaja skipped its theatrical release and had a direct digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video in October 2020. The film, starring Aravinnd Iyer and Aarohi Narayan in lead roles, was directed by Karthik Saragur and produced by Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah, along with Sapta Sagaralu Dhaati actor Rakshit Shetty and director Hemanth M. Rao.
