Amidst immense buzz and anticipation, Mohanlal’s highly awaited sequel to the blockbuster Lucifer, L2: Empuraan, hit theaters to a mixed reception from critics and audiences alike.
While the film initially created a sensation upon release, it soon faced backlash over certain aspects. A section of viewers, particularly those concerned with its portrayal of religious themes, criticized the filmmakers, including Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumaran. The controversy fueled negativity, prompting Mohanlal to address the situation.
Taking to social media, Mohanlal expressed regret over the political and social themes in Empuraan that had upset some fans. He emphasised that, as an artist, he bears the responsibility of ensuring his films do not incite hatred against any political ideology, belief, or religious group. In response to the concerns raised, he confirmed that the Empuraan team had collectively decided to remove the contentious elements from the film.
Reflecting on his four-decade-long cinematic journey, Mohanlal acknowledged that the love and trust of his audience remain his greatest strengths. He reassured fans of his unwavering commitment to their sentiments, emphasising that his sole intention is to create meaningful cinema.
Despite the controversy, Empuraan has made a massive impact at the box office, grossing over Rs. 100 crores within its first two days of release. A newly edited version, with over 17 scenes removed, is set to be released soon in theaters.
