Technology is like a double-edged sword, capable of being used for both good and bad purposes, depending on the intentions of its users. Unfortunately, highly advanced technology has reached a point where it can be quite unsettling. It has even made it possible to create films without the need for star actors.
Tragically, many celebrities, particularly actresses, have become targets of this sophisticated technology. In numerous cases, the faces of heroines have been manipulated to portray them in a negative light. The most recent individual to fall victim to this technology is Rashmika Mandanna, a beloved actress for many.
The situation came to public attention when a journalist shared a video in which the face of a woman named Zara Patel was replaced with that of Rashmika Mandanna using deepfake technology. This viral video even captured the attention of Amitabh Bachchan, who called on the government to take the necessary legal actions.
Finally, Rashmika Mandanna responded to the circulating video that featured her face. She took to her Instagram and shared a story in which she expressed her feelings, stating, “I feel really hurt to share this and have to talk about the deepfake video of me being spread online.”
She added, “Something like this is honestly, extremely scary not only for me, but also for each one of us who today is vulnerable to so much harm because of how technology is being misused. Today, as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well wishers who are my protection and support system.”
“But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity theft,” concluded the actress.
