It looks like Bollywood is yet to come out of the slumber. The Hindi film industry has pinned high hopes on Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hegde’s just-released mass action entertainer, Deva. However, the film, which hit theaters worldwide yesterday (Jan 31), has disappointed the trade big time.
As per the early estimates, Deva collected close to Rs 4.65 crore nett across the country on its opening day. The film managed to post these numbers from close to 12,000 shows with a shockingly low occupancy rate of just about 8 percent. While Shahid’s performance was appreciated by fans, the weak writing and a lack of a superhit audio album seem to have played a spoilsport. The situation is more or less the same in the overseas market.
After such a poor start, all eyes are on Deva’s box office performance on Saturday and Sunday. With Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force faring poorly, Deva still has a chance to gain momentum over the weekend. The film, an official remake of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Mumbai Police, is directed by Malayalam filmmaker Rosshan Andrews and produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur.
