Abbas Tyrewala, the director of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (JTYJN), is the same guy who wrote Main Hoon Na, the Munnabhai series and Maqbool amongst a host of other succesful films. And he is one guy with guts. Imagine a character telling you the entire story of the movie in the first five minutes and dismissing that kind of story as utter crap. The director does exactly that and then he shows the character getting completely drawn into that story, so much so, that she is crying for her friends to continue the story. JTYJN is one of those movies that comes along once in a way and raises hopes of a whole new generation of cinema.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

What is it about: If you must, then here is the plot. It is about a bunch of thick and close friends, two of whom are in love with each other. The entire world knows they are in love, but they are blissfully ignorant of the fact and set out to search for ideal partners for each other. They find someone special, spend time with them and finally realize they are meant for each other and there is a madcap climax. There goes the plot summary.

What is Special: What makes JTYJN special is that each of its characters is so well etched, each scene is so well written (every scene has a significance and connects to something else later on in the story) and the bonding between the characters is extremely natural. The lead pair of Imran and Genelia is the cutest pair Bollywood would have seen in a while, his submissive, non- violent Jai playing the perfect foil to the foul mouthed, catty and bratty Aditi. The group of friends, Rotlu, Bombs, Sandhya and Jignesh the Patel are as natural as natural can get and the narrative technique they use forms an interesting deceit in the movie. Ratna Pathak Shah and Naseeruddin Shah (within the limited 'confines' of his role) play stellar parts. Manjari Phadnis who plays Meghna is very very beautiful and acts pretty well too. Ayaz Khan is OK. Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, in their mindless cameos, are outstanding and add a zing to the climax that you wouldn't have thought possible. Paresh Rawal is endearing in the two scenes that he has and makes you wish for more. And it would be criminal not to mention Prateik Babbar who plays Amit, Aditi's brother. Raj Babbar and Smita Patil's son surely seems to have inherited his mother's genes and will no doubt be seen a lot more on screen. One of the other major crutches the movie rests on being AR Rahman's music. The few songs that there are on screen flow pretty well with the narrative and the madcap background score in the climax and pre-climax scenes is just so apt.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Me thinks: I could keep gushing and go on forever praising the movie, but if you are reading this and have not caught the movie yet, I sincerely suggest you should go see it at once. It is fresh as dew and if you do not come out of the theatre with a goofy grin on your face yours truly promises to pay you back your ticket money. A movie for the young at heart!!!
