Hotshot Tamil director Shankar who is known for churning out slick commercial blockbusters with a social message like, Bharatiyudu, Okkadu, and Sivaji is the producer of Kalasala which has been dubbed in Telugu. Unfortunately, despite being his presentation, Kalasala is a huge disappoint due to the lack of a script which makes it an endless drag

What is it about : The movie starts off with a bunch of school-mates joining the same Arts College and deciding to be together as a group. Muthu (Akhil) is an integral member of this group who bond strongly as they all come from poor backgrounds while believing that their friendship is platonic and above trivial college crushes and romances. Their classmate Shobhana (Tamanna) joins this motley group and pretty soon they are strong vibes between the urban English speaking Shobhana and the rustic Muthu. They decide to ignore these feelings since they are made to believe that their love would ruin the friendships amongst the group and so they continue with this denial for many reels and reducing audience patience levels until they are ready to acknowledge their love. But by then, it is too late thanks to a tragic event where Shobhana loses her life. This tragic twist seems to be forced into the script so that the movie can end abruptly …much to the audience’s relief. .

What is Good:Tamanna fans will probably be pleased since she is present in almost every frame of the movie. She continues with her Happy Days character and manages a decent job despite her limited acting abilities. Apart from that, rest of the cast look authentic as the small town college students

What is bad:The biggest letdown is the script which does not have enough drama in it to keep the audience attentive which makes it an endless drag where you keep waiting for something dramatic to happen. Another major irritant is that it looks and feels too much like a Tamil film thanks to the poor dubbing quality and Tamil lettering everywhere

Me Thinks:This flick can safely be avoided due to the complete absence of the entertainment quotient.

Tailpiece: Like all Shankar movies which are inspired by societal events & problem, Kalasala also uses the infamous bus burning incident of Tamil Nadu where three students died when political workers burnt a bus during a protest march!!!
