First things first – you need patience to see Rock On. I'm not saying it is a bad movie. It is a very good movie, it will almost surely attain cult status some time from now, but it will only do well at big city multiplexes. But it is slow, there is no rush to tell the story, nor is there any linearity in the screenplay. A beautifully interwoven tale of past and present, Rock On rocks on the foundation of some great performances and excellent music.

What is it about: The film is about Magik – a Rock Band formed by Aditya Shroff (Farhan Akhtar), Joe Mascarenhas (Arjun Rampal), Rob (Luke Kenny) and KD (Purab Kohli). The four of them want to make Magik India's greatest rock band ever, but their dream crashes even before it takes off. All of them make compromises with life and learn to adjust to reality, but deep inside their hearts, none of them is happy. Aditya's wife Sakshi (Prachi Desai) discovers her husband's past and decides to set up a reunion of the band members so that she can see her husband happy. With each of the band members battling their own personal demons, will this reunion ever happen and will they be able to recreate the Magik needs to be experienced on the big screen.

What is Good: The courage to make a movie like this needs applause first. Next come the performances. Brilliant performances from the entire cast – Farhan, Arjun, Luke, Purab, Prachi and Shahana Goswami (who plays Arjun Rampal's wife) carry the movie forward smoothly. The witty and real conversations, the avoidance of melodrama, the camera work that almost seems to reflect the mood of the scene work wonders for the flick. The music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy is awesome for a movie of this genre and the fact that two or three songs come bundled up after one another at several instances in the movie and still don't bore you should be evidence of that. The camaraderie between the friends will make you yearn you had friends like those. Abhishek Kapoor, the director shows remarkable command over the medium and the interspersing of the flashback is very well done.

What is bad: The caricaturization of some of the characters, the music director, head of the channel etc was not necessary for the flick. Also, the slow pacing of the flick is something that could have been taken care of. Rock On has a strictly urban appeal and will almost surely be out of theaters in the interiors in no time.

Me Thinks: Rock On is an urban movie. Very slice of life, very matter of fact flick that tells you that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. And if you have to leave, go out with a bang. For all those who had rockstar or movie star ambitions in their college days, this movie will definitely provide an identifiable scenario and that identification will work in its favor. See it if you like subtle humor, understated romance and underplayed emotions.
