Continuing with the trend of low budget films, yet another satirical flick titled ‘A Shyam Gopal Varma Film’ has hit the screens today. Starring the talented Shafi, this film is directed by Rakesh Srinivas. Let’s now see how the film is.
Story:-
Story of the film is quite simple. Shyam Gopal Varma(Shafi) is a talented director who keeps making films non stop. One fine day, he suddenly gets kidnapped and is put in a deserted room. Rest of the story is as to how Shyam escapes from this tricky situation and finds out who is behind his kidnapping.
Plus Points:
Shafi has done a decent job as Shyam Gopal Varma. He managed to imitate RGV and does not go overboard. Story idea is novel and some scenes which reveal the behind the scenes film set up and RGV style are ok. A few scenes which showcase Shafi’s struggle in the deserted place have been executed quite convincingly.
Minus Points:-
Even though the story idea is good, the way it has been executed is below par. We are used to satires on RGV, but an entire film has been designed on his life and career. There are way too many spoofs on RGV’s previous flicks which only increase the run time.
Rather than concentrating on the main concept, the story goes into many flashbacks and makes it a bit confusing. Too many characters make an entry in the second half and spoil the mood of the film.
Nothing happens during the first fifteen minutes and the story only wanders here and there. Comedy track of Chalaki Chanti is irritating and could have been easily chopped off.
Technical Aspects:-
Camerawork is ok and showcases the film in a decent light. Screenplay of the film is below par as there are way too many flashbacks and spoofs which spoil the essence of the film. Dialogues are ok and so is the art direction. Editing is below par as at least 15 minutes of the film could have been chopped off.
Director Rakesh Srinivas had a noble thought but the way he has gone about it is pretty bad. He could have made an interesting thriller if he could have stuck to the plot. Instead, he starts spoofing RGV and his movies and adds many scenes which go out of place.
Verdict:-
On the whole, A Shyam Gopal Varma Film is one project which goes off board completely because of its below par execution. This is not a film which you would want to start your new year with. You can safely ignore the film this weekend and look for something better.
