Kunal Khemu ventured into the OTT space with the show Abhay. The makers have now released its third season which is now live on Zee 5. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

In the first two seasons, top cop Abhay Singh(Kunal Khemu) is seen solving cases about serial killers in each episode. In the third season, the makers have gone one step ahead and have interlinked some of the cases from the previous seasons and form a fresh premise. Abhay cracks most of the cases but there are some which he is clueless about. His personal life is also dragged into these cases and this time, the antagonist is played by Vijay Raaz. How Abhay having both professional and personal issues solves these cases is the whole story all about.

Plus Points:

The basic theme and setup of the show is decent. The crimes are gritty and have been showcased in a brutal manner. Also, the manner in which the key characters are brought in is pretty good in the first three episodes.

Abhay 3 looks decent mostly because of Kunal Khemu’s performance. Though he is not that tall in stature to play a cop, Kunal kills it with his intensity. In this season, he is dealing with multiple issues apart from his work and this aspect has been showcased quite well by Kunal.

Vijay Raaz is one of the most fascinating characters and as expected, he is menacing from the word go. The crimes showcased in and around Delhi look menacing. Divya Agarwal and Tanuj Virwani who play social media stars are impressive in their act.

Minus Points:

Though the initial episodes look interesting, the director Ken Ghosh takes some time to get into the actual problem. The show gets a little interesting only after Asha Negi’s entry and her evil plan to trap Abhay.

One of the biggest drawbacks of the show is that it has too many layers. All those who missed the first two seasons can get confused a bit with the unique storytelling and overlapping screenplay.

The show also tries to bring in an element of superstition but leaves it without being explored. As said earlier, the director opens various threads and does not complete them properly. This is where the logic goes for a toss and many questions end up being unanswered.

Technical Aspects:

As said earlier, the setting is good and creates a good vibe of suspense and mystery around. The background music is rightly placed. The backdrop and the dark spaces are showcased quite well by the camera department. Editing is not that good as each episode is 45 minutes long and could have been toned. The Telugu dubbing is not up to the mark and looks loud in various areas.

Coming to the director Ken Ghosh, he has done a passable job with the third season. His writing is weak but he executed a few episodes quite well. As he dwelled into way too many subplots, he lost grip on the proceedings.

Verdict:

On the whole, Abhay 3, like its previous seasons, has a gritty backdrop. Kunal Khemu and Vijay Raaz are superb in their acts and the crimes showcased are interesting. But slow pace, logical issues and confusing screenplay bring the show down a bit. All those who watched the previous two seasons will like the show but for those watching new, the show can get a bit clueless and too much to handle.
