Maverick director Ram Gopal Varma, has been churning out films one after the other. His latest presentation is the psycho thriller Anukshanam. Starring Manchu Vinshu and Revati in lead roles, this film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.
Story:-
A series of deadly murders take place in Hyderabad, and the police find out that a dreaded psycho killer is behind these killings. DCP Gautam(Vinshu) takes charge of the case, and starts his hunt for the killer.
As he does not get much clue about these serial killings, he takes the help of Shailajaa(Revathi) a research specialist on psycho killers. Rest of the story is as to how Gautam and Shailaja crack this case, and nab the killer.
Plus Points:-
Firstly, concept of the film is quite interesting, as it has hardly been used in Telugu films. Manchu Vishnu plays an author backed role with utmost ease and conviction. He should be credited for leaving his star image, and going with the script of the film. He looks top class and carries the whole film on his shoulders. His expressions in a particular scene with Navdeep in the police station speak volumes of his acting.
After a long gap, Revathi appears in a interesting role and brings in a lot of belief to the film. Madhu Shalini and Tejaswi ably support the film with their cameos. First half of the film is quite interesting, and the way the whole story is set up is also quite good.
Lastly, the surprise star of the film is Surya, who did the role of psycho killer. He looks scary, and suits his role supremely well. The way the young actor has gone about his role, and brought in dreadful effect, is quite endearing. Credit should also be given to RGV for showcasing him quite convincingly.
Minus Points:-
Major drawbacks of this film are the basic loopholes. There are many logics that are missing in this film. Scenes in the second half are just hurried on to us, and do not have much clarity. The way the psycho killer goes about killing Vishnu’s close aides, has not been showcased convincingly.
Yet another drawback of the film is the police angle showcased in the film. Rather than showcasing the counter attack of the cops and dealing with the key elements, RGV concentrates more on the emotions behind the killings. Films like these should also be driven with much logic which was sometimes missing here.
Technical Aspects:-
As in every RGV film, technical aspects are quite good. Background score of the film is brilliant, and elevates the film to another level. Camerawork is top notch, and showcases the film in a superb light.
Dialogues are neat and so is the editing. Screenplay of the film is quite promising except for the last 10 minutes, which is hurried up completely. Coming to RGV, he chooses an interesting thriller, and nicely sets it up to Indian sensibilities. The way he showcases the psycho killer and his emotions are quite good but goes a bit overboard during the end.
Verdict:-
On the whole, Anukshanam is surely RGV’s better films in the recent past. Interesting set up, racy narration and superb performance by Vishnu are huge assets. On the flip side, simple loop holes and a hurried up climax spoil the fun to an extent. Finally, if you go in without expectations and go with the mood of the film, you will surely end up liking this decent psycho thriller.
