The film Baapu has been released today after a decent round of promotions. Popular character artist Brahmaji played a lead role after a long time. Check out our review of this emotional rural drama to know if it meets your expectations.
Story:
Baapu’s story is set in a Telangana village, where Chanti (Racha Ravi), a JCB operator who believes in hidden treasures, dreams of settling down by buying two JCBs with the gold idol he discovered. However, in a twist of fate, the goddess idol is stolen from him. On the other hand, Mallayya (Brahmaji), a financially struggling cotton farmer, leads a debt-ridden life along with his father Rajayya (Sudhakar Reddy), wife Saroja (Aamani), and children. As the story unfolds, we learn what happens to the missing gold idol and why Mallayya’s family hatches a plan to kill him.
Plus Points:
Those who watch Baapu without high expectations will be rewarded with a decent treat. Set in the rural Telangana milieu, Baapu’s story has an interesting blend of thriller elements and heart-touching emotions. The story starts off with an interesting premise and continues to unfold smoothly with a decent treatment.
The director envisioned a poetic ending that helps the audience connect to the story and root for the protagonist. The director succeeds in delivering the core message of Baapu – “What doesn’t belong to us, and what we are not deserving of, won’t ever come to us” – by blending it with finely executed thrilling moments and comedic and emotional elements. As always, Brahmaji comes up with a fine act in Baapu that is in contrast with his recent performances. He brilliantly portrayed a wide range of emotions.
Aamani, too, showcases what a seasoned performer she is. Dhanya Balakrishna and the actor who played her brother, Mani Aegurla, drive the story forward with fine performances, especially in the comedy and emotional scenes. Balagam fame Sudhakar Reddy is another major highlight of Baapu. He enthralls audiences with his hilarious comedic timing. Srinivas Avasarala fits his role well. Racha Ravi also gave a decent performance.
Minus Points:
While Baapu features a decent storyline, the movie could have been more engaging. The emotions click in certain scenes, but the first half doesn’t make a significant impact. The main plotline of the family planning to kill the father feels silly, and not all audiences would connect with it.
The slow and predictable moments, often appearing forced, dilute the overall experience. The romance track featuring Mani Aegurla and the love songs in the middle feel unnecessary. Removing these would have made a stronger impact. The story feels unoriginal at times, with some similarities to the movie ‘Bhagyalakshmi Bumper Draw,’ which also involved a treasure hunt for a lottery ticket.
Technical Aspects:
While music composer RR Dhruvan’s score is decent, the songs are okay. Vasu Pendem impresses with splendid cinematography, showcasing the rural Telangana milieu in a natural setting and giving the film a fresh and authentic feel overall. Editor Alayam Anil could have chopped off a few unnecessary scenes.
Director K Dayakar Reddy impressively adds thrilling elements to a rural emotional narrative. He created a fine story and extracted fine performances from his actors. However, he could have taken more care in executing a few scenes that feel routine. His work, on the whole, is commendable.
Verdict:
Baapu is an underwhelming rural family drama that attempts to narrate an emotional story of an agrarian family with a few thrilling elements. The movie is let down by dull moments and unnecessary scenes and ends up being a below par watch.
