Dakshina, featuring Sai Dhansika, known for her role in Kabali, alongside Rishav Basu in another pivotal role, has been released today. Directed by Osho Thulasiram, let’s explore how well it has resonated with the audience in this review.

Story:

Dakshina (Sai Dhansika) is a dedicated police officer. In the city, a series of murders of young girls occurs in rapid succession. A psycho is kidnapping and brutally killing these girls. Who is this psycho, and what motivates these horrific crimes? What dramatic twists unfold as the story progresses? Meanwhile, a tragic event disrupts ACP Dakshina’s life. How does she seek revenge against the perpetrator of this atrocity? What challenges does she confront along the way? Ultimately, what does Dakshina achieve? This forms the core of the narrative.

Plus Points:

Sai Dhansika, in the lead role, delivers a compelling performance, showcasing her physicality and excelling in emotional and intense crime sequences. She surprises the audience with her impactful portrayal, especially in key scenes. Rishav Basu, in a crucial role, also impresses, particularly in the climax, where his performance stands out as a highlight of the film.

The flashback concerning Dakshina’s character is well executed. Additionally, director Osho Thulasiram skillfully navigates the film through various angles surrounding the murders, effectively engaging the audience in several instances.

The supporting cast, including Subhash and Anand Bharathi, seamlessly integrates into their roles. Moreover, the film’s opening scene successfully piques the audience’s interest.

Minus Points:

Despite having an intriguing crime drama, certain segments of Dakshina unfold rather predictably. Several scenes in the first half drag on, lacking engagement, and the screenplay could have been stronger. Additionally, unnecessary lagging scenes detract from the overall pace. The film suffers from a slow narrative, lackluster treatment, and unrealistic emotional portrayals.

How can an ACP be so easily kidnapped and assaulted? The entire film revolves around this central question, which required a more robust and detailed establishment to be convincing. Apart from a few key scenes and the interval sequence, the first half lacks sufficient intrigue. While the director attempted to infuse emotional depth into the second half, the execution of these emotions fell short of expectations.

Moreover, trivial emotional moments and poorly constructed scenes hinder the film’s flow. Ultimately, while the makers of Dakshina elevate the intended content on screen, certain scenes do not meet expectations. The climax also fails to leave a lasting impact.

Technical Aspects:

From a technical standpoint, director Osho Thulasiram does not effectively enhance the film with a gripping treatment suitable for crime thrillers. The screenplay needed further refinement. However, the cinematography is commendable, with the cameraman capturing key scenes naturally, especially in the opening visuals and the second half.

Balaji’s music is satisfactory, and the background score complements the narrative. Improved editing could have added significant value, while producer Ashok Shinde’s production values are noteworthy.

Verdict:

On the whole, Dakshina is an emotional crime mystery drama that ultimately falls short of making a significant impact. While the lead’s character, some crime scenes, and the opening sequence are well executed, the slow screenplay, lack of engaging moments in the first half, and logical inconsistencies in critical sequences diminish its effectiveness. It’s best to skip it and choose other entertainment options.
