So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is the original web-series Delhi Crime. Directed by Richie Mehta, this series is available on Amazon Prime.
What’s it about?
The web series is all about the dreaded Nirbhaya gang rape that happened in Delhi way back in 2012. It is a part fact and fictional adaptation of that story where Deputy Commissioner of Police Vartika Chaturvedi(Shefali Shah) is tasked to find the culprits responsible for the assaults and death of the female victim.
What’s good?
The whole set up and how the Delhi police went about nabbing the culprits is showcased in a very realistic manner. The ghastly crime done and the very ideology behind it and how all of that is showcased through a back and front screenplay looks good. Shefali Shah is terrific as the DSP and evokes solid emotions. Her role is the toughest but she pays it with aplomb. Sudhir Kumar’s (Gopal Datt Tiwari) is another interesting character.
The Knitty gritty of the police department in handling high profile cases have been showcased well. A scene where the doctor explains you how brutal the gang rape is done will shock you. The media frenzy, public outrage, political interference, and even opportunism that surrounded the case are shown, but that is not Delhi Crime’s intent as the focus remains on the way cops dealt with the case.
What’s bad?
The series tends to get a bit slow when the backstories of some of the cops are showcased in detail. Some more known actors should have been chosen to make things look more effective. The narration is a bit complex and some people will not get through the scenes that easily.
Final Word :
Overall, Delhi Crime is a terrific web series that is emotional, gritty, and hard-hitting. The lead cast’s performance and the entire set up keeps you hooked throughout. Barring the slightly complex narration, all those who want to know what happened to Nirbhaya’s case and how the cops nabbed the culprits, this series ends as solid watch this lockdown period.
