Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan, is now streaming on Netflix. The film is directed by Aamir Khan’s ex-wife, Kiran Rao, and this is her second directorial venture. Let’s find out how the film is.

Story:

Deepak Kumar (Sparsh Shrivastava) marries Phool (Nitanshi Goel), and the couple board a train to Murti, where Deepak and his family live. As it is the auspicious Tritiya Day, many people exchange vows, and hence, the train gets crammed with newlyweds. Deepak and Phool sit beside two other couples, but all the brides cover their faces with a red veil. When the destination arrives, Deepak mistakenly gets down with another bride, Pushpa Rani (Pratibha Ranta), and takes her to his home. Pushpa unveils the veil, and the whole family is shocked upon seeing her. The rest of the film is about how Deepak tries to find his missing wife.

Plus Points:

When Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan’s name is associated with a film, one would expect something special from it. Laapataa Ladies hits the right spot by providing entertainment and delivering an important social message. The film isn’t preachy by any means; the proceedings are kept light-hearted throughout.

Generally, while making films on societal issues, some filmmakers tend to take a serious approach, which isn’t wrong. But if such films are told in an entertaining manner, there is a high chance that they will reach a wider audience. This is the best part of Laapataa Ladies. Kiran Rao and the team have crafted interesting sequences through which the humor is generated. She communicated the message effectively without missing out on the entertainment factor.

Everything seems very organic, and the characters are very relatable. However, the best is reserved for the last 30 minutes. By the time the film is completed, one will have a pleasant smile, and at the same time, it will make us think. The film has the best-written female characters in recent times. All the actors delivered heartwarming performances, but Pratibha Ranta and Ravi Kishan were the show-stealers.

Pratibha Ranta is adorable, and the film’s intent is conveyed through her character. Ravi Kishan, as a cop, is remarkable with his witty dialogue delivery and stunning screen presence. Sparsh Shrivastava effectively depicts the pain Deepak’s character goes through. Nitanshi Goel will win over us with her innocent and charming portrayal. Chhaya Kadam leaves her mark by mouthing some wonderful dialogues. The film can be watched with the entire family, which makes it even more special.

Minus Points:

A few logical errors in the plot prevent the film from being perfect. The film is undoubtedly impactful, but a few aspects are ignored. Had they been taken care of, it would have been even better.

The film starts on a slow note, and it takes some time to get into the groove. Though the runtime is crisp, a couple of sequences could have been cut short. The pacing gets slightly slow at times.

Technical Aspects:

Just like the film, the music by Ram Sampath offers a pleasant experience. The songs fit into the narrative seamlessly. The cinematography by Vikash Nowlakha is neat and sets the right mood for this feel-good drama. The editing could have been better, while the production design is appealing.

The makers spent what was required for the film. Kiran Rao addressed a few social issues in a captivating manner, with delightful moments sprinkled throughout. The emotional and compelling finale makes up for the pacing issues.

Verdict:

On the whole, Laapataa Ladies is a simple yet adorable film that highlights the key issues faced by women in society. There is a good amount of entertainment, and the film never gets preachy. Performances by Prathibha Ranta, Ravi Kishan, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Nitanshi Goel are highly impressive. There are some logical errors in the plot, and a few scenes in the first half could have been better. The pacing is a bit slow at times. Nonetheless, Laapataa Ladies is worth watching with family. Recommended.
