Commercial films and action entertainers dominate the Box Office in our country. This is even more pronounced in South Indian cinema. But once in a while, films like ‘Midhunam’ and ‘Aa Naluguru’ also shine at the Box Office. A debut director named Ramaraju has made the film ‘Mallelateeramlo Sirimalle Puvvu’. The movie is being promoted as a traditional Telugu story. How good is it? Does this film have what it takes to make a mark at the Box Office? Let us check it out.
Story :
The story of this film revolves around Lakshmi (Sri Divya), who is a simple and traditional girl. She agrees to marry the guy chosen by her father (Rao Ramesh) and enters her new home with many hopes and aspirations.
But she soon realises that her husband is very different from her. She finds it tough to match his wavelength and discovers that they do not have mutual compatibility. Her husband’s sole aim in life is to earn money and get rich. This disturbs Lakshmi.
During this phase, she comes across a guy named Kranthi (Kranthi). He is a lyricist for Telugu films and Lakshmi instantly develops a liking for him. Kranthi loves flowers, is well read and appreciates the simple joys of life.
What starts off as a simple friendship turns into something much more complicated for Lakshmi. She discovers that she no longer has any feelings for her husband and wants to start a new life with Kranthi. But she has some apprehensions about society and traditions.
What will Lakshmi do? Will she listen to her heart? Is her husband really bad? That forms the story of Mallelateeram lo Sirimalle Puvvu.
Plus Points :
This film has some brilliant dialogues, deeply philosophical moments and some fine performances. It is a film that will appeal to people who are interested in Telugu literature and philosophical teachings. The conversations are very tender and sweet.
Sri Divya looks like a Bapu Bomma in the film. She looks very beautiful in sarees and she is a perfect fit for the role. Kranthi has done a decent job. The actor who has played the role of Lakshmi’s husband is good.
The film has excellent visuals. The frames, the quality of cinematography and the colours used are all quite brilliant. The story and the way it has been treated deserves applause.
Minus Points:
This movie will not appeal to mainstream cinema lovers. The entertainment quotient in the film is really low. It is a very serious and poetic saga and you require patience to sit through the slow narration.
The film is targeted at a very niche audience and that will limit its box office potential. The romantic track is devoid of any commercial elements and while that is not bad, it will certainly not attract young people in droves.
The philosophical concepts and the references to Telugu literature will not be understood by everyone. Those who can connect to what is being said will be fine. But for those who cannot, the viewing experience can become very tough.
Technical Aspects :
Bal Reddy’s cinematography is excellent. The quality of visuals will make a very good impression on you. Pavan Kumar’s background score is an asset for the movie.
Rama Raju’s writing is really good. As a director, he has succeeded in bringing about a very authentic Telugu atmosphere. But perhaps, he should have struck a better balance between commercial aspects and creativity.
Verdict :
Mallelateeramlo Sirimalle Puvvu is a slow and poetic saga. Most people can appreciate a good painting. But how many can sit through and watch the artist as he/she goes about painting it? If you have that kind of patience and if you want to try something different, you can check out this movie.
