Oh My God 2, starring Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam in key roles, is now out in theatres. The comedy-drama is written and directed by Amit Rai. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Kanti Sharan Mugdhal (Pankaj Tripathi) runs a stall that sells pooja items. He is a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva and has two children. Kanti’s son Vivek (Aarush Verma) gets into a huge mess as a video of him masturbating in his school toilet goes viral on social media. The school management decides to rusticate Vivek for his indecent behavior. Kanti chooses to go to a different place for a few days along with his family. This is when he comes across a messenger of Lord Shiva, played by Akshay Kumar. The messenger of God makes Kanti understand that the latter’s son is not at fault and advises Kanti to fight for his son. What did Kanti do next? This forms part of the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Special applause to the entire team and especially director Amit Rai for choosing a topic that is considered taboo in the country. The movie emphasizes the need for sex education in an entertaining manner without getting preachy. It discusses the ill effects of a lack of sex education in schools in a convincing manner.

A recent Hindi film named Chhatriwali has also spoken about the same issue, but what works well with Oh My God 2 is the way the film is packaged with solid humor, clap-worthy dialogues, and splendid performances. There are many scenes that would make one howl with laughter.

Akshay Kumar delivers a scintillating performance, and his screen presence is blissful to watch. Whenever he appears on screen, he leaves a solid impact. When a powerful subject meets a star like Akshay Kumar, the result is Oh My God 2. The dialogues penned for Akshay Kumar were splendid, and they take the story forward.

Pankaj Tripathi will never fail to amaze us, and here in Oh My God 2, he has hit it out of the park with his spell-binding performance. His comedy timing is impeccable, and the courtroom scenes involving him came out extremely well. Yami Gautam’s performance as an expert lawyer is the icing on the cake in this comedy drama.

Aurush Verma is pretty good in his given role. The courtroom proceedings are well crafted. Especially the sequence involving a sex worker took the film to the next level as it conveys the essence of sex education brilliantly. Pavan Malhotra fits the bill rightly as a judge.

Minus Points:

Though Akshay Kumar’s role is impactful, fans might get a bit disappointed as the star actor doesn’t have more screen time. After a racy and solid first half, the graph dips in in the initial few minutes of the second half. The pacing is a bit slow in a few scenes.

The editing team could have shortened the length of a few scenes to make the film even more enjoyable. However, these are minor speed bumps, and they don’t distract the viewers much.

Technical Aspects:

The music department did a very fine job, and especially Har Har Mahadev song was too good to watch on screen. Amalendu Chaudhary’s cinematography is stupendous. The majority of the film happens in a court, and the art direction team did their job perfectly. The editing is decent, and the production values are fine.

Coming to the director, Amit Rai, he has given a solid message to society in a captivating manner. The movie is a sincere attempt at eliminating the inhibitions present in society with regard to the discussion about sex. Oh My God 2 is one of those rare films which matches the quality of the first part. The casting was on point.

Verdict:

On the whole, Oh My God 2 is a highly entertaining film that stresses the significance of sex education in schools. The strong content is bolstered by power-packed performances from Akshay Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, and Yami Gautam. The movie will tickle your fun bones, and also it will make you think. The momentum dips slightly in the first few minutes of the second half though. Attempting such a sensitive subject in mainstream cinema is appreciable, and the impact got enhanced due to the addition of Akshay Kumar. Recommended.
