Tamil superstar Dhanush’s Maaran opted for direct to OTT release. The film is available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. Scroll on to catch our review of the the Karthick Naren directorial which has Malavika Mohanan in the female lead role.

Story:

Sathya Moorthy(Ramki), a journalist, is killed by goons for reporting an ugly truth about a politician. His son, Maaran(Dhanush) grows up to be an investigative journalist much like himself. Incidentally, Maaran also lands in big trouble as he reports an incident pertaining to EVM tampering. The MLA candidate, played by Samuthirakani is affected by Maaran’s new report and he then sets out on a mission to make Maaran’s life miserable. What follows later forms the remaining plot.

Plus Points:

Dhanush’s terrific act is one of the very good things about Maaran. He delivers a fine performance in the role of an investigative journalist. An investigation scene that comes in the early stages of the second half is the pick of the lot and it offers a thrill or two.

Minus Points:

Firstly, it is hard to believe that Dhanush had played a script as weak as this one. The film has so many illogical scenes that it is hard to keep count of them. A kidnapper calls a police station for ransom. The protagonist becomes an award-winning journalist in a span of 5 minutes. Maaran is filled with illogical scenes like these.

There is no point speaking about the story, because the film has none. It simply is a collection of incoherent and illogical scenes. Good thing that the film released directly on OTT. Had it released in theatres, the audience would have had a horrible experience.

Technical Departments:

The director Karthick Naren has come up with a screenplay that has very little novelty. He simply patches one random scene with another to compile a 120-odd minute film that fails in so many more aspects than one. The music and cinematography are of okayish quality. Editing is poor, but there is nothing much the editor could have done, given the abysmal story and screenplay.

Verdict:

On the whole, Maaran is one of the poorest films in Dhanush’s career. It makes for a poor watch and is filled with illogical scenes and dragged episodes. You can skip this film and look for something worthwhile to watch on Hotstar.
