Amazon Prime Video, which has been offering varied content to its users, has come up with its first original film titled Maja Ma. It stars veteran actress Madhuri Dixit in the lead role. The film got premiered on the OTT platform today. So let’s see how it is.
Story:
Tejas Patel (Ritwik Bhowmik) hails from an average middle-class family. Pallavi Tejas (Madhuri Dixit) and Manohar Patel (Gajraj Rao) are his parents. Tejas works in the USA and falls for Esha Hansraj (Barkha Singh), who is an NRI. Esha’s parents are overprotective of their daughter and go to any extent to ensure good things for her. Esha’s parents visit Teja’s family to discuss the marriage of Tejas and Esha. During this, a shocking revelation happens that becomes a roadblock for the wedding. What is it? Did Tejas and Esha marry? This forms part of the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
The main point of this film is not revealed anywhere in the promotional content, and once we see it in the movie, we will surely be shocked. The makers took a sensational topic, and the story was set well in the initial hour. Though the topic has been attempted before, there is freshness in the storytelling in the first hour.
The way Esha’s parents try out lie detector tests to ensure the safety of their daughter is well executed. Few scenes evoke good laughs too. Madhuri Dixit is the heart and soul of Maja Ma. The veteran actress looked gorgeous, like always, and she performed brilliantly throughout. Especially in emotional scenes, the actress showed her mastery.
Ritwik Bhowmik and Gajraj Rao got good roles in the film and did their part very well. The dialogues are well written in a few scenes, making us think and feel simultaneously.
Minus Points:
While the makers successfully set up the plot, they didn’t continue the same in the last hour. Once the shocking issue is unfolded, there isn’t anything much interesting in the proceedings. The boring scenes and unexciting narration tests the patience. The sensitive topic surely deserved better presentation and execution.
There is enough scope to elevate the drama, but the screenplay becomes monotonous with unnecessary scenes in the last hour. The film’s theme is not suitable for all sections of the audience. The climax scenes look artificial, and how a few characters change suddenly doesn’t seem convincing at all.
One more biggest drawback in the film is that a main character, which is very crucial to this film, isn’t given much screen time. Hence the depth of the film can’t be felt to the full extent.
Technical Aspects:
The music by Souumil Sringarpure is decent, and so is the cinematography from Debojeet Ray. The production values are fair, and the makers spent what was required for the film.
Coming to director Anand Tiwari, he did a strictly okayish job in dealing with a sensitive topic. His attempt is appreciated, but this story needed solid execution. However, he managed to extract good performances from the artists.
Verdict:
On the whole, Maja Ma is a brave attempt that was let down by mediocre narration. Madhuri Dixit and other actors’ performances, the good first hour, and a few dialogues are its strengths. On the flip side, the boring second hour, lack of proper execution, and lousy climax makes the film strictly an okayish watch this weekend.
