Yet another film of actress Yami Gautam named Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga has taken the direct OTT route. The movie, directed by Ajay Singh, has Sunny Kaushal in the other key role. The movie is currently streaming on Netflix, and let’s see how it is.
Story:
Neha Grover (Yami Gautham), an air hostess, falls in love with a businessman, Ankit Sethi (Sunny Kaushal). Neha becomes pregnant, and when everything is going smoothly, Ankit reveals to Neha that he has an outstanding debt of 20 crores which is aroused from his previous business. Ankit is asked to do a diamond robbery to repay the debt. As Ankit refuses, a small fight takes place between his creditors and him, due to which Neha loses her pregnancy. With no option left, Neha and Ankit decide to do the robbery on a plane that is carrying the diamonds. But much to their shock, the plane gets hijacked by a group of terrorists. What happened next? Did Neha and Ankit succeed in the heist? The movie has the answers.
Plus Points:
The basic premise of the film is pretty exciting. Combining the aspects of heist and hijack is an interesting idea. Of course, we would have seen heist dramas and hostage thrillers separately, but the thought to mix these genres is impressive. On one hand, we are shown two lovebirds who plan to pull off a heist to repay their hefty debt, and on the other side, we have a bunch of terrorists who have their own demands.
The movie starts off very well, and the character intros are done nicely. Yami Gautham is just getting better with each film of hers and has once again done a compelling job here. As an air hostess and as a person worrying about her boyfriend, the actress gave a superior performance.
Sunny Kaushal was fine in his role. Sharad Kelkar, though seen for a brief period, makes a very good impact. He, as a smart RAW officer, did a convincing job. The movie has a few interesting moments.
Minus Points:
While what seemed like a pretty exciting idea on paper, the film isn’t that interesting. Till the time the hijack happens, the movie moves on an interesting note, but later it turns out to be disappointing. The way the hijack is showcased lacks conviction and sounds silly. Hence the impact gets reduced immensely.
These days audiences have become smarter as they have access to global content at the tip of their fingers. Hence it is important that the makers need to be more careful to outsmart the viewers and can’t go wrong even with one scene, especially for a thriller. This is where the movie takes a nosedive. The presence of a couple of scenes will make one foresee the further sequences, and hence the twists won’t really surprise.
The movie is wrapped up just in 100 minutes. There is a lot that appears to be happening on the screen, but the fast-paced editing gives a feeling that everything ended abruptly. After a really good setup, the reveal and payoff were underwhelming.
Technical Aspects:
Ketan Sodha’s background score is fine. Most of the film happens in the plane, and the cinematography by Gianni Giannelli is good. The production values are adequate. However, the editing, as mentioned, could have been better.
Coming to the director Ajay Singh, he did an okay job with the film. The concept was fascinating, and the movie could have been a great thriller if not for the issues in writing. The potential was not thoroughly utilized, and hence the film becomes just an okayish fare.
Verdict:
On the whole, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is a heist-hijack thriller that has a good premise but an underwhelming finish. Yami Gautam does well and carries the film on her shoulders. But one gets disappointed with the mid and final portions after a promising start. You can still give this film a shot for its genre-bending nature.
