Comedian Sapthagiri’s new movie, Pelli Kani Prasad, has hit the big screens today. Read our review to find out how it is.
Story:
Katnam Prasad (Sapthagiri), a man working in Malaysia, remains single even at 38 because his father (Murali Goud) insists on marrying him off only if the bride brings a dowry of Rs. 2 crore. Meanwhile, Priya (Priyanka Sharma) and her family are fixated on settling in the United States, rejecting alliances that don’t align with their dream. After facing multiple rejections, Priya learns about Prasad and cleverly decides to marry him without paying a single penny in dowry. Her plan works, leaving Prasad’s father furious. However, a shocking revelation turns things upside down for Priya and her family. What is the unexpected twist? Why are they so determined to move abroad? Why is his father so adamant about the dowry? How does Prasad navigate these hurdles? Do they finally settle as they wish? The rest of the film unravels the answers.
Plus Points:
Sapthagiri plays a more restrained role compared to his usual energetic performances, and he manages to entertain in parts with his expressions and reactions to various situations. His character’s struggles and comic timing work to an extent, bringing occasional laughs.
Priyanka Sharma does a fair job portraying a woman with big dreams and aspirations. She shines in a few moments and has a pleasing screen presence. Her character, representing those who dream of a better life overseas, has some interesting moments.
Muralidhar Goud, Annapurna, and other supporting actors make an effort to add humour, delivering performances in their familiar comic style. Their scenes manage to create some fun moments here and there.
Minus Points:
Comedy works best when it feels natural and evokes genuine laughter. Unfortunately, in Pelli Kani Prasad, the humour feels forced, and many comedic moments fall flat due to exaggerated performances.
Instead of enhancing the fun, the over-the-top acting makes several scenes frustrating rather than amusing. Characters like Priyanka, Pramodini, and Mahaboob Basha go overboard, turning potentially funny moments into tedious ones.
Certain sequences, such as a household worker insulting and hitting the protagonist in the name of comedy, feel misplaced and unnecessary. Additionally, several dialogues and situations are reminiscent of scenes from well-known films. While taking inspiration isn’t an issue, the execution here lacks freshness.
The climax is underwhelming, with hurried storytelling and excessive overacting, making for a disappointing conclusion.
Technical Aspects:
Director Abhilash Reddy Gopidi misses an opportunity to craft an engaging comedy. The premise, though familiar, could have been more effective with well-developed characters and better execution. The humour, which should have been the film’s strongest point, turns into its biggest drawback. The music is passable, and the cinematography is decent. Production values are adequate, and the editing is fairly smooth, but none of these aspects manage to elevate the film beyond mediocrity.
Verdict:
On the whole, Pelli Kani Prasad is a lackluster comedy that suffers from weak execution and exaggerated performances. While Sapthagiri delivers a decent act, the film lacks originality and engaging humour. If you’re looking for fresh entertainment or well-crafted comedy, this one might not be the best pick for the weekend.
