MAD Square is the latest Telugu coming-of-age comedy-drama and a sequel to the 2023 super hit MAD. With decent buzz surrounding its release, the film has finally hit theaters. Does it live up to expectations? Let’s find out in our review.

Story:

Laddu (Vishnu Oi) arrives at Tihar Central Jail, striking fear into everyone around him. Curious about his past, a gang of prisoners asks what led him there. With a sigh, Laddu unravels his story—how his three friends, Manoj (Ram Nithin), Ashok (Narne Nithiin), and Damodhar (Sangeeth Sobhan), turned his wedding into a disaster, setting off a chain of events involving more people and unexpected twists that ultimately led to his downfall. Packed with fun, chaos, and surprises, the rest of the story is best experienced on the big screen.

Plus Points:

MAD Square is a lighthearted coming-of-age comedy that delivers a fair share of laughs. While the story takes a backseat, the film thrives on its entertaining moments. The three leads—Sangeeth Sobhan, Narne Nithiin, and Ram Nithin—bring energy to their roles and keep the humor alive.

Vishnu Oi shines as the central character, effortlessly making his struggles amusing for the audience. Muralidhar Goud, who plays his father, is another highlight, adding to the fun with his impeccable comedic timing.

Some well-executed comedy sequences—especially those surrounding Laddu’s (Vishnu Oi) wedding—are entertaining. A few moments in the second half also land well, ensuring there are enough laughs to keep the film engaging.

Minus Points:

While the film was never marketed as story-driven, the real issue lies in the uneven comedy. Some jokes fall flat, and at times, the humour feels forced rather than organic. The second half, in particular, lacks the same energy and comedic impact as the first.

Sunil’s character, Bhai, doesn’t leave much of an impression. Apart from a few interactions with Muralidhar Goud, most of his scenes feel unnecessary. Additionally, supporting characters like Antony and Satyam Rajesh are underutilised, missing an opportunity to enhance the comedy.

Unlike its predecessor, this installment lacks engaging songs and a memorable love track. This absence makes the film feel slightly less entertaining compared to the first.

Technical Aspects:

Director Kalyan Shankar delivers a film with fun moments and plenty of laughs, even if it doesn’t always hold up logically. However, a tighter second half with better-utilized characters could have elevated the overall experience.

Musically, only the Swathi Reddy song stands out, while the rest are forgettable. The background score is decent, the cinematography is adequate, and the production values are strong. The editing is okay.

Verdict:

On the whole, MAD Square is a decent comedy entertainer with enjoyable performances, especially from Narne Nithiin, Sangeeth Sobhan, Ram Nithin, Vishnu Oi, and Muralidhar Goud. While the film has its fun moments, the lack of a strong story and inconsistent humour—especially in the second half—keep it from being a standout. MAD Square is worth a one-time watch if you enjoy comedy films.
