Amid high expectations and positive buzz, Nithiin and Sreeleela’s highly anticipated heist comedy entertainer, Robinhood, was released in cinemas worldwide earlier today as a Ugadi festive treat. Check out our review to know how the Venky Kudumula directorial has fared.

Story:

As a young orphan kid, Ram (Nithiin) sees the plight of his fellow orphans due to hunger. This prompts him to steal money from the wealthy by devising clever plans. He distributes the loot to the needy. Meanwhile, a ruthless villain (Devadatta Nage) plans to expand his illegal marijuana business internationally. He learns that a special variety of marijuana grown in the Rudrakonda village has a huge demand. Meanwhile, Vasudev’s daughter Reena Vasudev (Sreeleela) travels to Rudrakonda. What is the link between the villain and the AV Pharma company head in Australia, Abhinav Vasudev (Sijju)? Why does Ram also travel with her? How does the drug mafia kingpin David (David Warner) fit into the story? The answers to these questions unfold on the big screen.

Plus Points:

Director Venky Kudumula has proven his mettle with his trademark entertainment. He continues the momentum from his previous films in this one. His ability to balance emotions and humor is impressive in this Robinhood. He handles emotional scenes well and carries the essence of the film without compromising on the entertainment quotient. His comedic timing in his writing is spot-on, and the first half of the film has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The second half has a decent emotional depth, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Nithiin impresses with a subtle performance. He looks stylish in the action sequences, and his comedic timing and emotional expressions remain consistent and solid. His chemistry with Nithiin Rajendra Prasad and Sreeleela generates fun moments. Sreeleela performs her role well and wows her fans with her comedic timing.

Villain Devadatta Nage has delivered an excellent performance. His portrayal of the antagonist character is impactful, and he displays villainous traits right from the beginning. Other supporting actors like Subhaleka Sudhakar and Lal have delivered excellent emotional performances. Vennela Kishore’s comedic scenes are well-executed, and Australian cricket star David Warner surprises with his ease in performance with a light comedy touch and subtle negative shade in his performance.

Minus Points:

Though the film is decent, it could have been more gripping. The screenplay is engaging and hilarious, but it tends to slow down as the film progresses. Many characters are absent for long stretches in the crucial second half, causing the narrative to lose momentum. The villain, who was shown as a strong character in the beginning, is reduced to a weak figure towards the climax, which feels underwhelming. Additionally, the humor that was consistent in the first half goes missing in the second half.

Two songs in the film are enjoyable, but they seem to disrupt the flow of the story. If these songs were removed, the film would have been more seamless and well-paced. The film could have benefited from tighter pacing and more consistency in tone.

Technical Aspects:

The production values in Robinhood are decent, though the VFX work falters in certain moments. In one instance, a bloodstain on Nithiin’s face appears noticeably artificial, making it clear that more refinement was needed. Small details like these could have been handled better. G. V. Prakash’s music complements the film well, and the cinematography effectively captures the tone. Editing is adequate but could have been sharper-some unnecessary songs disrupt the film’s flow and should have been trimmed.

Director Venky Kudumula once again proves his knack for entertaining storytelling. His attention to detail, comedic timing, and ability to craft scenes that connect with the audience work well. The action sequences, in particular, highlight his stylish approach. However, while the film thrives on humour and engaging moments, parts of the narrative feel predictable. The drug cartel backdrop is a familiar trope, making some scenes feel routine. That said, the emotional depth and the protagonist’s motivations are well-executed, adding weight to the story.

Verdict:

On the whole, Robinhood is a fun, lighthearted entertainer that delivers its fair share of laughs and emotions. Venky Kudumula’s signature humour, paired with well-executed emotional beats, makes it an enjoyable watch. Nithiin and Devadatta Nage deliver solid performances, adding to the film’s appeal. While a tighter, more gripping narrative could have elevated it further, Robinhood still serves as a decent weekend entertainer for those looking for a fun, time-pass movie.
