Continuing the trend of Tamil dubbed films, yet another movie which has hit the screens today is Dammunte Sommera. Let’s see how this film turns out to be.
Story:
The film is based in a haunted bungalow of Sivaganga Parvatam area. Kumar(Santanam) and Kajal(Anchal Singh) are two lovers who decide to marry each other. But Kajal’s dad, who does not approve of their relationship makes a false promise to Kumar and his family and takes them to the bungalow in order to kill them. Rest of the story is as to how Kumar saves himself and his family from the evil spirit which lives in the haunted bungalow.
Plus Points:
Comedy works well in the film. There are certain episodes which have been written quite well as they generate decent comedy most of the time in the second half. Santham was pretty impressive in his tailor-made role. His transformation as a lead hero is good in this film and at the same time, his comedy touch and oneliners which he is famous for seem to stay intact.
Rajendran’s comedy is also good in parts. The way his scenes with Santhanam have been executed is impressive. The second half is where the fun is placed at regular intervals and generates a decent interest for the audience.
Minus Points:
The film takes forever to enter into the main block. Scenes showcased to establish the hero and his love track is a big bore in the movie. Things do not move at a good pace during this time and this is where the film falters. After a point in time in the second half, the film gets quite predictable. The climax is copied from many English films and looks fake.
There is absolutely no chemistry between the lead pair. Anchal Singh is a misfit as the heroine as her performance and screen presence are very disappointing. Even though the comedy works in parts, the basic plot of horror comedy is not at all novel as Telugu audience might have seen it in many films in the past.
Technical Aspects:
Songs in the film were a massive disappointment. But the background score by Karthick was pretty decent and elevated the film well. Camera work was good as the scary effect in the bungalow has been showcased effectively. Telugu dubbing was apt and so was the production design. Coming to the director Ram Bala, he has done a half-baked job with the film. Even though he adds good fun in the second half, the entire first half and climax have nothing interesting to offer and make this film routine.
Verdict:
On the whole, Dammunte Sommera is a half-baked horror comedy which works only in the second half. But to enjoy that fun, one needs to sit through the boring and disappointing first half. If you are okay with this, then Santhanam and comedian Ranjendran manage to entertain you in parts and make this film a below average watch this weekend.
