Superstar Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan has finally arrived in theaters amid much anticipation. Jump into the review to see if this action-packed crime drama lives up to expectations.

Story:

Athiyan (Rajinikanth) is an encounter specialist who believes in delivering justice, even if it means crossing moral lines. His life takes a tumultuous turn when he meets Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan), a courageous school teacher who stands firm against injustice. Tragically, she is murdered in a shocking turn of events, pushing Athiyan into a labyrinth of questions: Who killed her? How did he inadvertently get involved in a case that leads to an innocent’s death? And what will he do to expose the real culprit? How is Nataraj (Rana Daggubati) connected to the story? These questions will be answered in the film.

Plus Points:

Rajinikanth’s portrayal of the formidable encounter specialist is mesmerising, showcasing his trademark style and charisma. The film shines with electrifying mass moments and exhilarating action sequences.

The contrasting motivations of Amitabh Bachchan’s character – who seeks swift justice for wrongdoers – and Rajinikanth’s character, who believes in bending the rules, are skilfully executed. Amitabh immerses himself deeply into his role, adding gravitas to the narrative.

The chemistry between Rajinikanth and Rana Daggubati is compelling, highlighted by engaging dialogues that enrich their scenes. Rana delivers a strong performance, especially as his character evolves in the second half.

Fahadh Faasil’s role adds further layers to the story. Supporting performances from Manju Warrier and Ritika Singh, along with actors like Abhirami, Dushara Vijayan, Rohini, and Rao Ramesh, contribute significantly to the film’s depth.

The serious turn brought on by the murder effectively drives the first half, while Anirudh’s background score elevates the cinematic experience. Director T.J. Gnanavel skilfully balances action with emotional storytelling.

Minus Points:

Despite its decent premise and character development, the film falls short in delivering some engaging elements that could elevate the experience further. The serious tone sometimes overshadows the emotional depth, making parts of the narrative feel drawn out.

Moreover, certain scenes in the second half could benefit from tightening to improve pacing. A more logical and robust conflict for Rana’s character could have enhanced the film’s emotional stakes.

While the main characters are captivating, the investigation scenes occasionally drag, and the second half doesn’t maintain the intensity established in the first half, which detracts from the overall impact.

Technical Aspects:

Anirudh Ravichander’s music stands out, particularly his background score during action sequences, which heighten the film’s tension. The editing is competent, though a tighter second half would have improved the film’s flow. S.R. Kathir’s cinematography captures the essence of the action beautifully. Producer A. Subaskaran ensures high production values, contributing to the film’s overall appeal.

Verdict:

On the whole, Vettaiyan is a crime action drama that works to an extent. It showcases Rajinikanth’s magnetic presence and stellar acting, complemented by powerful emotional moments and thrilling action. On the flip side, some scenes feel prolonged, and the second half lacks the same urgency as the first. The film ultimately caters to fans of the Superstar and enthusiasts of gripping action thrillers. Keep your expectations in check if you want to watch it.
