Lockdown Review : The Lift Boy on Netflix

So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is The Lift Boy. Directed by Jonathan Augustin, this film is streaming on Netflix now. Let’s see how it is.

What’s it about?

Raju Tawde(Moin Khan) is an engineering drop out who is not serious about his life. His father is a Lift Man in a plus apartment. One fine day, Raju’s dad suffers a heart attack and is forced to rest at home. This is the time Raju is forced to take up his dad’s duty as a lift boy. There he encounters the landlady called Maureen Dzousa(Nyla Masood) and his life changes upside down. To know what happens, you need to watch the film.

What’s good?

Moin Khan as the frustrated Lift Boy does well. He suits the role perfectly. The middle-class emotions and how a drop out feels when he is thrown into filthy rich people have been showcased nicely. Nyla Masood, who plays the landlord does well in the film with her serious act. How all the relationships are interlinked to a lift is thought of well. The last fifteen minutes of the film have good emotions which look real. Production design and whole set up along with camera work is showcased nicely. The rest of the cast are very sincere in their approach.

What’s bad?

The film is a tad too slow and is narrated on a serious note. The relationships between the lift boy and landlord should have been showcased in a more affectionate manner in the beginning. The characterization of Maureen as an angel who comes into the aid of the lift boy looks a bit over the top in the beginning as it is justified only in the end.

Final Word

Overall, The Lift Boy is a slice of life film that has some sincere performances. The subject is simple and narration is neat. But it takes time to grow on you as the proceedings are slow to start off. Barring that this film can be given a shot for its sincere making and unique theme.
