So, continuing the series of reviewing movies and shows during the lockdown period, our today’s pick is the Malayalam film Sufiyum Sujathayum. The film is available on Amazon Prime now and let’s see how it is.

What’s it about

Sujatha(Aditi Rao Hydari) is a beautiful young girl who cannot speak. She falls in love with a Muslim Sufi(Dev Mohan) who works at a mosque. Sujatha dances to the early Azaans from the mosque and is head over heels with Sufi. But as in every love story, Sujatha’s parents dislike the match and get her married off to Rajeevan (Jayasurya) in Dubai. How will Sujatha lead a forceful marriage? What happens to Sufi and Rajeevan in all this? That forms the rest of the story.

What’s good?

Aditi Rao Hydari is superb in the film. Her gorgeous looks, dances, and expressions as she plays a person who cannot speak a word are superb. Her body language and emotional outburst in many scenes are superb and Aditi holds the film well. Newcomer Dev Mohan is perfect as Sufi and does well in his given role. His voice and the way he recites the Urdu words and poems are very good.

But it is Jayasurya who is the star of the film. He as the frustrated love is solid and gives a commendable performance. He brings a lot of depth to the film in the latter part. The music is top-notch and camera work is extraordinary. The film has a poetic feel in the first half and the production design needs a special mention. The dialogues and production values are also neat.

What’s bad?

The film is heavily inspired by Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and has traces of Ninnu Kori, to say the least. The premise is good but the story is old. After the initial one hour where romance and drama are showcased, the film becomes monotonous. The writing becomes weak and pace also drags until the interesting climax is brought into the setup.

The element of Love Jihad is brought up in the film and it does not gel with the theme of the movie. Though some may like it, too much time is spent on establishing the romance in the beginning.

Final Word

Overall, Sufiyum Sujathayum is a romantic drama that is inspired by some old Hindi films. But the premise in which it is set looks good. The performances, romance, and climax are neat whereas the slow pace, routine story, and dull narration in many areas bore the audience. If you watch the film with low expectations and go with the mood of the film, you may like it but there is nothing new in it.
