Varalakshmi is on top of her game as she is doing some good roles in Telugu. She will next be seen as a lawyer in Allari Naresh’s Naandhi.

About the response to Jayamma from Krack?

I knew it would click but did not have an idea that it would go so deep into the audience. Everyone who meets me is only talking about Jayamma’s role and I feel so blessed and happy about it.

What was the reaction from your dad Sarath Kumar to Jayamma’s role?

My father is very proud of my role in the film. In fact, I remember, he called me from the sets of his film in Hyderabad and made me speak to Chiranjeevi sir. The way Chiru sir spoke to me and remembered my character was so good to hear. It was the best compliment of my career.

About your role in Naandhi?

This is a complete changeover from Jayamma’s role as I play a lawyer in this film. It is a serious character who travels with the hero Naresh and fights for him. She takes him as a case study and what all happens to her along with Naresh is the story.

How tough was it to play a lawyer?

Playing a lawyer was not tough at all but the most difficult part was to remember the long lines that I had to mouth as a lawyer. Each scene was four pages long and I had a tough time remembering the dialogues. But I am really proud that I dubbed on my own.

Don’t you think you are getting stereotyped doing negative roles?

I don’t think so. For me, the character should excite me even though it is different. If you look at my roles, they are different from each other. My upcoming films are also going to show me in a different manner.

Working with Allari Naresh?

He is a very quiet person on the sets and does not talk much. He was very supportive throughout the film and has given a very good performance which will change his career.

Future projects?

I have okayed three films in Telugu and one of them is with Sundeep Kishan. That film will go on floors very soon.

Finally, why are not doing typical female lead roles?

I do not like when people ask me such questions about doing female leads. I am an actress and want to do different roles. I am a huge fan of Vijay Sethupathi as he does all kinds of roles. When a hero does that no one asks but when an actress tries doing it, many questions arise. I want’ to break those myths.
