Not many know that Samantha, Nayanthara, and Vijay Sethupathi have even done a film called Kanmani Rambo Khatija. The film has been released with an absolutely low buzz today. Let’s see how it is.
Story:
Rambo(Vijay Sethupathi) comes from a small village and whatever he touches turns out to be a dud. So, upset with this, he comes to the city and does multiple jobs. He works as a cab driver and falls in love with Kanmani(Nayanthara). At the night, he works as a bouncer and woos Khatija(Samantha). Why did he date two girls? Whom will he marry? How did Kanmani and Khatija react to this weird situation? That forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
One of the biggest assets of the film is the presence of stars like Samantha, Nayanthara, and Vijay Sethupathi. The screen is filled with colorful images as these three are there in almost every scene and share good chemistry.
Vijay Sethupathi does well as the man stuck between two women. There is a scene where he proposes to both the heroines and Vijay is top-notch with his dialogues and expressions. If not for Vijay, the film would have looked quite bland.
Samantha gets to play a posh girl with an open mind. Not only does she look hot but brings a lot of relief with her fun role. On the other hand, Nayanthara gets to play a simple middle-class girl and she too was okay within her limitations. There are a few comedy scenes between the three which are decent.
Minus Points:
The film has an interesting premise and looks good on paper. But it is the execution by Vignesh Shivan that makes things go for a toss. Right from the first scenes, the emotions look forced and do not create any impact.
The hero is shown to have a disorder but that is not handled well at the end. Also, the manner in which the love story is brought to a breakpoint looks fake and has no depth. The supporting cast and the family drama are irritating, to say the least.
There was a good scope to create solid drama in this script but the director made it silly and over the top. Two girls love the same man but they never get hurt or upset knowing the man was cheating on her. There are so many such errors in this film which is filled with mundane and dull scenes.
Technical Aspects:
Anirudh’s music is horrible and so was his BGM. The camera work is okay but the way Nayanthara’s costumes were designed looked dull. Dialogues and Telugu dubbing is pretty good.
Coming to the director Vignesh Shivan, one cannot understand the way he has taken the film on a lighter note. There is absolutely no seriousness in his storytelling. He tried to take a fun angle to narrate a story of a man wanting to marry two women but it has backfired in a big way. Had he shown the situations and emotions in a serious manner, the output would have been quite effective.
Verdict:
On the whole, Kanmani Rambo Khatija is a silly triangular love story that fails to click. Silly narration, lack of proper emotions, and excessive length bore the audience. The only saving grace is a few comedy scenes and the presence of beautiful ladies like Samantha and Nayanthara.
