ZEE5 has come up with a new web series named Vyavastha. This legal drama features Karthik Rathnam, Hebah Patel, and Sampath Raj in key roles. Oy director Anand Ranga helmed this web show. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Yamini (Hebah Patel) gets arrested on the night of her marriage in her husband’s murder case. She approaches reputed lawyer Chakraborty (Sampath Kumar), the head of the law firm Chak Mate, to handle the case. But Yamini doesn’t trust Chakraborty, and she changes her lawyer. Vamsi (Karthik Rathnam), who works under Chakraborty, is her new lawyer. The interesting fact here is Vamsi would have loved Yamini in the past. What happened next? What challenges did Vamsi face due to Chakraborty in this process? Who had the last laugh? This forms part of the crux of the series.

Plus Points:

Karthik Rathnam gave a very sincere performance in Vyavastha. The young actor, who impressed everyone with his performances in C/o Kancherapalem and Narappa, was too good in the series and showed solid aplomb in his acting. After Karthik Rathnam, it is undoubtedly Sampath Raj who stole the show. Sampath Raj did a spectacular job as a renowned lawyer who decides to do anything to become more affluent.

The scenes that showcase how Sampath Raj establishes monopoly in the legal system are very interesting. The show starts off really well, and the characters are nicely introduced. Kamna Jetmalani got a small role, and the actress was decent in it. The director touched on a shocking point through her character, which is not known to many. The dialogues are well written, and at times, the show gets interesting.

Minus Points:

After the first episode, it is tough to understand where the show is actually heading. We get to see many characters and many subplots that are not at all related to the main plot. The director establishes the characterization of Sampath Raj in a neat manner, but after that, the show doesn’t take off. Many repetitive scenes keep coming one after the other. There is a lot of beating around the bush that will surely make one forget the main point.

In fact, the unwanted scenes have overshadowed the positive aspects existing in the series. The editing is bizarre, as there is no connection between most of the sequences. Furthermore, as Hebah Patel goes missing for a significant time, it becomes tough to apprehend what the makers want to convey.

The focus was entirely on subplots which brought down the show as a whole. The basic idea to showcase the corruption in the legal system is good, but the way the series is narrated is not appealing. Billed to be a legal courtroom drama, there are hardly any courtroom scenes. In addition, the show is very lengthy, and it requires a great amount of patience to complete it. The manner in which the series ends is again highly disappointing.

Technical Aspects:

Naresh Kumaran’s background score is okay. The cinematography by Anil Bandari is decent. The production values are good. However, the editing team could have trimmed down many unnecessary scenes that are totally irrelevant to the key plot. Art director Brahma Kadali did a superb job.

Coming to the director, Anand Ranga, he did a below-par job with the series. He has filled the series with way too many subplots that actually undermine the point chosen. There is also a lot of amateurishness in the show, and hence even a few decent scenes lack impact. The premise has more potential, but the way things are handled made the series a boring fare.

Verdict:

On the whole, Vyavastha is stretched legal drama that starts off well but loses steam afterwards. The basic premise is good, and the series would have been compelling had the execution been good. But the focus was heavily on subplots that sideline the main point itself. Apart from the solid performances of Sampath Raj and Karthik Rathnam and a few interesting moments, this series is a tedious watch.
