Based on the trend in the last couple of years, the Bollywood audience seems to have lost interest in the sports genre completely. Well-made sports dramas 83 and Maidaan failed to set the cash registers ringing. These two films were mounted on a high budget, but their collections were dismal, to say the least. Another sports drama titled Chandu Champion hit the screens yesterday.
Headlined by Karthik Aaryan, the film is based on the life of India’s first Paralympic gold medallist, Murlikant Petkar. Star director Kabir Khan helmed this flick. The latest update is that Chandu Champion took a low opening at the box office by raking in just 5.4 crores nett. Though the actor and director have a good reputation among the audience, the opening is way below the mark.
Even though the ticket prices were kept affordable (Rs.150), there wasn’t any impact. A few are commenting that there is absolutely no potential for sports films in the coming days. The Karthik Aaryan starrer received good reviews, and the makers hope that word of mouth will help the film achieve good numbers this weekend. The first Monday is also a holiday, and the movie has to show significant growth in collections to make up for the below-par opening.
