Today marks a historic achievement for India at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light has won the Grand Prix, the festival’s second-most prestigious award after the Palme d’Or.
The film received an 8-minute standing ovation following its screening, a remarkable accomplishment. It has been 30 years since an Indian filmmaker has achieved this level of success at Cannes.
In her acceptance speech, Payal Kapadia said, “Thank you very much, Cannes Film Festival, for having our film here. Please don’t wait another 30 years to have another Indian film.”
All We Imagine As Light, a Malayalam-Hindi film, delves into the lives of two Malayali nurses in Mumbai. Indian celebrities have congratulated Payal Kapadia, celebrating her win as a proud moment for India on the international stage.
