Generally, it is a herculean task to pull the audience to theatres when a film doesn’t have stars or if it is headlined by newcomers. But the recent Tamil film Vaazhai, starring newcomers and not-so-popular actors, is setting the cash registers ringing. It’s a children’s drama helmed by Mari Selvaraj, who previously made films like Pariyerum Perumal, Karnan, and Mamannan.
Despite the limited release, Vaazhai minted over 7 crores gross from the Tamil Nadu box office in its opening weekend, and this is nothing short of a sensation. The movie opened to superb reviews from critics, and word-of-mouth is also extremely good. Vaazhai went from strength to strength with each passing show, and it is already said to have recovered its budget and entered into profit zone with three-day collections.
Today is a holiday on account of Janmashtami, and the movie is utilizing the holiday advantage to the full extent by reporting solid occupancies. There is high demand from the public to increase the showcasing, and the makers are adding shows wherever possible. With Vaazhai, Kollywood is on the verge of scoring yet another blockbuster.
The movie stars debutants Ponvel and Raghul in the lead roles, alongside Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J. Satish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Janaki, Priyanka Nair and Nivedita Rajappan in supporting roles. Santosh Narayanan composed the tunes.
