Megastar of Mollywood Mammootty starrer Christopher made its digital debut on Amazon Prime Video in multiple languages including Telugu. Let’s see how the biggie is.
Story:
ADGP Christopher Antony (Mammootty) is an upright police officer and encounter specialist in Kerala. He encounters 5 culprits who raped and murdered a woman in the state. After this, CM is pressured by Human Rights activist Beena Mariam Chacko (Sneha), also ex-wife of Christopher. ACP Sulekha (Amala Paul) investigates the case and decides to unearth the history of Christopher. During the process, she learns about his gruesome past. Who is Christopher? Who is Sitaram Trimurthi (Vijay Rai) and how is he connected to the past of Christopher? The main film has all the answers.
Plus Points:
Star actor Mammootty lives in the character of Christopher. His subtle performance as a person with a disturbing past and present is impressive. His action speaks volumes about his character. The way he pulls off the character is quite remarkable.
Amala Paul as an ACP gives her best. This is somehow a different character than she portrayed in the last few films. Meanwhile, Sneha performs well as a wife of a sincere policeman and also a selfish sister of a young man who committed crimes.
One of the important characters after Mammootty is Amina played by Aishwarya Lekshmi. She performed so well in the small yet powerful role which drives the story in the second half. Her scenes with Mammootty are good to watch.
The background score by Justin Varghese elevates many scenes, especially the action sequences. The slo-mo shots during the action sequences are neat.
Minus Points:
‘Justice delayed is justice denied.’ This is what the director wants to tell audiences through Christopher. For this, the director Unnikrishnan in association with writer Udaykrishna has come up with a prolonged movie that is filled with gory sexual assault scenes.
The sluggish screenplay and a few repetitive scenes bring boredom to audiences for sure. The film’s plot is nothing new to our audiences as they might have seen this kind of stories in many old films.
The film has many notable actors but the director didn’t use them to their fullest potential. For instance, Vinay Rai, the lead antagonist should have been shown as a more stylish and ruthless person. The film would have been so good if the confrontation scenes between Mammootty and Vinay Rai were written well.
Besides having a pale story, the film also lacks strong emotions that could make one feel sad. Incorporating a few poignant scenes between Mammootty and Aishwarya Lekshmi would have added significant emotional depth to the film.
Technical Aspects:
Both the director and writer failed this film with their poor script and screenplay. Faiz Siddik succeeds in making the film look good through his lens. The score given by Justin Varghese is the only aspect that makes Christopher a watchable fare. Removing several scenes from both halves of the film would have resulted in a better overall outcome. Production values are fine. The dubbing is also good.
Verdict:
On the whole, Christopher is a slow-paced and unimpressive action thriller. Except for Mammootty, the film has nothing great to offer. If you are okay with laggy scenes and snail’s pace screenplay, you can watch Christopher this weekend.
