‘Rakshasudu’ is one of the much anticipated flicks this season. This movie has created an unprecedented buzz all over South India and has released across 1900 screens all over the world. Let’s see how it is.
Story :

Masss (Suriya) is an easy-going youth who opts unusual ways to deceive people with the help of his friends. In this process, he meets with an deadly accident one fine day and suffers major injuries. From this point of time, some unreal incidents start taking place in his life. This is also the time when Malini(Nayanatara) comes into his life and Masss falls in deep love with her.

As time passes by, a number of dead souls keep haunting Masss with whom he communicates regularly. One among them is the spirit which looks exactly like him. Who is that spirit ? Why is it disturbing Masss ? and How are they related to each other ? To know answers to all these questions, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

Plus Points :

Suriya’s stupendous performance is the major plus point for this horror drama. His stylish look is a big boon for the film and Suriya has slipped into both the characters with a lot of ease and enthusiasm. He demonstrates superb mannerisms in both these roles which are quite different to each other.

The second half is the most riveting part in the movie. It unravels during the flash back and deals with a good dose of emotions which are spellbinding for the audience. The first fifteen minutes of the movie and the interval bang are good and have good effect on the audience.

Comedian Premgi Amaren, who played Suriya’s sidekick has done complete justice to his role. His funny track provides good entertainment for the audience. All the remaining actors have performed at par and brought balance to the story.

Negative Points :

The major shortcoming of this horror drama is the first half of the movie. After the initial introduction of all the characters, director Venkat Prabhu messed up the story and opted for some below par comic scenes.

Despite having an top actress as the female lead, the makers were not able to utilize Nayanatara’s acting skills completely. Her character needed a lot of establishment and clarity in the story.

Some unnecessary scenes arise in the plot very often and hinder the flow of the movie. The bizarre graphics in the first half are not up to the mark and fail to excite the audience.

Technical Aspects :

Director has chiseled out both characters of Suriya with a lot of care but failed to make this film an engaging horror flick. Screenplay is average as the director has not given thorough importance to the plot which is interesting only in bits and parts.

Yuvan Shankar Raja gave a superb background score but his songs lack freshness. Lyrics are not so interesting. There are many lengthy scenes which could have been easily edited by Praveen KL.

Cinematographer RD Rajasekhar did a decent job with the visuals. Every frame looked stylish and a couple of songs were fabulous on screen. The production values are also good as the makers have not compromised on any segment of the movie.

Verdict :

On the whole, Suriya’s ‘Rakshasudu’ is entertaining only in bits and pieces. The makers have ensured that it had all the commercial elements but failed to make it engaging for the audience. Given the fact that Suriya is a well established actor in Tollywood, due credit should be attributed to him for his bold decision in selecting an unconventional subject. Suriya’s fans will thoroughly enjoy this flick but for the rest it is an average affair.
