Star hero Ranbir Kapoor is now back with another rom-com titled Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar this Holi season. The movie, directed by Luv Ranjan, has Shraddha Kapoor as the leading lady. The film hit the screens today, and let’s see how it is.

Story:

Mickey(Ranbir Kapoor) looks after his family businesses in Delhi. He also secretly runs a breakup business with the support of his friend Manu Dabbas (Anubhav Singh Bassi). Manu Dabbas, who is about to marry his girlfriend Kinchi (Monica Chaudhary), requests Mickey to help him with his breakup. Mickey and Manu Dabbas leave for Spain for Manu and Kinchi’s bachelor party. During this trip, Mickey comes across Tinni (Shraddha Kapoor), a friend of Kinchi, and falls for her instantly. Though Tinni is reluctant initially, she starts loving Mickey slowly. Mickey and Tinni even get a nod from both their families for marriage. Suddenly, problems develop between the lovebirds, and the marriage gets canceled. What are those problems? How did they affect the pair? Did Mickey and Tinni sort out their issues? This forms part of the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

What makes Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar more enjoyable is the beautiful family drama that is woven into a love story. The movie stays true to its genre, and at the same time, a neat family emotion runs in the background. These two elements are nicely balanced in the second half, and the film runs on a faster note in this hour. The conflict point between the lead pair is relevant and throws light on modern-day relationships. The movie doesn’t try hard to amuse the audiences, and it just is a reflection of how present-day relationships are being affected.

It has been a long time since a Bollywood movie came up with a proper chartbuster album, and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar fills that void. Every song is beautifully composed, and these songs just enhance the range of the film. They are neatly placed and will lift the spirits. The entire climax episode involving Ranbir and his family is hilarious and will make audiences leave the hall with a big fat smile.

From the time the narrative shifts to India from Spain, things become racy, and the film turns entertaining. There is a surprise package in the movie that will entertain and surprise the audience. Shraddha Kapoor is at her absolute best and looks quite sensuous in the film. Her role is not just limited to glamour scenes, but there is a lot to it. She competed with Ranbir in terms of performance and dance moves, and the lead pair shared a cracking chemistry.

There is a reason why Ranbir is hailed as the actor best suited for rom-coms among current generation heroes, and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is just a testament to it. The actor is a delight to watch in the movie, and he gave it his all. His mannerisms, body language, looks, and dancing skills are very well utilized by the director. Generally, there will be ease in Ranbir’s acting, and when it comes to rom-coms, Ranbir takes the madness to another level. The actor displayed supreme capability in acting, emotional, and comedy sequences.

Minus Points:

The first hour is needlessly stretched, and the pacing is a tad slow here. The entire Spain portion is very boring, and the narrative in this particular episode is not at all appealing. The writing could have been a lot better here, which could have made the film even more interesting.

There are not one but many monologue conversations between the lead pair in the movie. These particular monologue conversations are fine in a few scenes, but they become a bit irritating after a point in time. In addition, the film is a bit long, and the first half could have been crispier. Also, a few portions went over the top.

Technical Aspects:

Pritam’s songs are superb and make one vibe to the movie. Especially Tere Pyaar Main and the Thumka song are lovely to watch on the big screen. The background score by Hitesh Sonik is good. Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran’s cinematography is exquisite, as the movie looks colorful throughout. The production values are splendid, and the songs are shot in a lavish manner. The editing is below-par.

Coming to director Luv Ranjan, he played nicely to the strengths of Ranbir with Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. But, what’s more, remarkable is the way he incorporated the family drama amidst a youth love story, thereby giving the film a nice depth. A relevant topic in society is told in an entertaining manner, and the output was good as the film has talented artists like Ranbir and Shraddha Kapoor. That being said, the first half needs heavy corrections. Also, the makers should have focussed on reducing the lengthy conversations, which affected the impact as a whole.

Verdict:

On the whole, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is an enjoyable rom-com that also has a fine amount of emotions. There are many crowd-pleasing moments, but the best part about the film is the underlying family drama. Ranbir and Shraddha are solid in their roles, and other artists nicely supported them. Barring the slow first half, this rom-com is a good watch this week in theatres.
